Berkeley Farmers Market

Today I helped out at the berkeley farmers market. i got to the park at about 7.15- after i dropped clare off where she was meeting other students to ride up to redding together to take some soil samples downstream form a removed dam.

it was chilly- i sat on the bench and chatted with a 40 year old mexican male. the was walking with crutches and i asked what happened- he said that the cops pulled him over, ran his license- it was suspended- had him do a breathalyzer and field tests, then handcuffed him and then beat him- this was in june. we talked about stuff for a while. then i went to help set up the sound and chairs for the music on the park. kirt organized the music and it went well. ben and tammy managed the market which was getting under way by the time the music was coming together. they work for the berkeley ecology center who manages 3 markets in berkeley.

i helped at the table with some sales of stainless steel water bottles- great to get off plastic and drink clean water. plus i emptied the compost bins and trash a few times. this city, and sf also, collect compost in addition to trash and recycling. i also helped relieve some sellers working alone. it was fun.

next weekend i will be helping at the slow food nation conference in sf.
