Permaculture

Today starts my first permaculture design class, PDC, and Merritt College, which is not located near lake merritt but instead in the oakland hills- 54 bus from fruitville bart stop.

the class is full but hopefully they will find a spot for me. here is the info- http://www.merrittlandhort.com/

i am looking forward to it. the biggest issue i see here is that it does not rain in the summer- berkeley has not had any rain since july 1, perhaps even longer. rainwater collecting and storage will be important i imagine.

what a great class. a beautiful location on the top of oakland hills- the bike ride up was killer and the ride down was faasstt!! the class can 'hold' 35 but 51 showed up. let's see how this gets handled.

we worked in the garden, a one acre site on a steep slope. lots of swales, straw mulching, fruit trees, perennials mixed with annuals.

the class works like this- if you take it twice you get the pdc certificate. 8 of the 51 were coming back for part 2.

for first timers we use toby hemingway's "Gaia's Garden". people tkaing the second time use "Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond" by brad lancaster.

I have ceased going to this class. A combination of 50+ people in the class, it being 10 miles away, being pretty familiar with most of the material and methods already, and time conflicts are why I have stopped.

I do feel my presence was good for both the class and myself, and may visit form time to time, but right now it is too large and I am too busy.

Interesting experiment from Gia's Garden- find three water sources near you- a pond, stream, large puddle- collect water form all three sources and mix them in a jar- watch it change over the next few days, weeks, and months. Things will happen.
